Born in Seoul, Korea, Soo-Young Lee started her musical education with violin at age of 5 and continued with clarinet at age of 12. She graduated her bachelor degree in Seoul National University with Dong-Jin Kim, master degree in University for Music and Performing Arts Graz with Stefan Schilling and Konzertexamen in University of Music Detmold with Thomas Lindhorst.
She has participated in Mahler Chamber Orchestra Academy and Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphonieorchester in Luzern Festival as well as Estonian Festival Orchestra, Detmolder Kammerorchester and many international music festivals in Korea, New York, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Spain, Norway and Estonia.
Since 2014 she has worked in Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and since 2019 as principal clarinet. As guest principal clarinet she has been invited to Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid, Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Wales National Opera, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Nordic Chamber Orchestra and BBC National Orchestra Wales. As soloist she performed with Bielefeld Philharmonie, Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, Rumanian National Orchestra, Vienna-Korea Philharmonie, Korea Philharmonic Orchestra and Seoul Youth Philharmonic Orchestra.
From her special interest in chamber music she is one of foundation member of Ensemble Auftakt and in 2016 Ensemble Auftakt performed Alban Berg’s ‚Adagio‘ (the 2nd movement from Kammerkonzert) and in 2019 received the 1st prize of Danubia Talents International Chamber Music Competition in Budapest as well as in 2022 the 1st prize of Clara Wieck Schumann Chamber Music Competition in Italy and was finalist of Antón García Abril Chamber Music Competition in Spain.
She won the 1st prize in Woohyun Winds and Percussion Competition in Seoul, Special prize in Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory Winds and Percussion Competition and the 1st prize in Detmold Music Interpretation Competition.
Since 2016 she works as lecturer in Estonian Academy for Music and Theater.
