In 2006, Riivo Kallasmaa won the Con Brio competition for performers held in Tallinn and he has been awarded the title of Tartu Young Cultural Leader.

In addition to Estonian orchestras (including the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra), Kallasmaa has also worked with the Turku Philharmonic and the Pori Sinfonietta (Finland). He has been a member of the Estonian Festival Orchestra since its inception. As a chamber musician, Kallasmaa collaborates with the NYYD Ensemble, Voces Musicales and Kremerata Baltica. He also takes part in the vocal ensemble Vox Clamantis.

As a soloist and chamber musician, Riivo Kallasmaa has performed at several festivals and concerts in Europe (Pärnu Music Festival, Horten Chamber Music Festival, La Folle Journée de Nantes). Several Estonian composers, such as Timo Steiner, Tõnis Kaumann, Helena Tulve, Rasmus Puur, Pärt Uusberg have written for Riivo Kallasmaa.

In addition to the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, Riivo Kallasmaa has also studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels and at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.

In 2018, he and the soprano Jaanika Kuusik formed Duo ObSolute. The ensemble is gaining recognition both at home and abroad.
