Estonia’s one of the most valued brass instrument players Indrek Vau obtained a Master’s degree from the Sibelius Academy (Prof. Jouko Harjanne) in 2001. In addition, he has undertaken further training in the master’s courses of Stephen Burns and Eric Aubier.
Since 1993 (with a break from 1996–2000) she has been the concert master of the trumpet group of the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra (ERSO) as well as participated in several foreign orchestras (Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Turu City Orchestra – in the last two as a solo trumpeter). In addition, Vau regularly participates in the activities of Helsinki Baroque Orchestra.
Since 2000, he has been a lecturer at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (an associate professor since 2011).
Vau’s repertoire includes trumpet concerts of classical as well as 20th century composers. He has performed before ERSO, Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, Moscow Novaja Opera Orchestra, and other orchestras in cooperation with such conductors as Paavo Berglund, Neeme Järvi, Arvo Volmer, Nikolai Aleksejev, Eri Klas, Olari Elts, Risto Joost, etc.
Vau is a valued chamber musician, who orders and records trumpet pieces and is their first performer.
In 2004, he published his first solo record “Estonian trumpet music” in cooperation with the pianist Mati Mikalai. On the CD published in 2009, Vau performs Eino Tamberg’s trumpet concerts as an ERSO soloist.
In 2008, the artist was awarded the Annual Award of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia for performance and, in 2017, d the Annual Music Award of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.
Indrek Vau performs most of his solo repertoire with Bach Spada trumpets and old music with Francis Tomes’ master instruments, which are copies of the second natural trumpet of Johann Leonhard Ehe dating back to 1746.
